My Thoughts on Golden Demon at Warhammer Fest 2023
Golden Demon at Warhammer Fest 2023 returned with a bang in Manchester this year, marking its first major event since the pandemic. The atmosphere was buzzing, with the Manchester Arena providing an impressive backdrop for the awards ceremony. One notable change, however, was the absence of design staff and their portfolios – a personal favourite aspect of mine in previous events. Despite this, the event was still a splendid showcase of talent and creativity.
The competition was stiff, with over 400 entries in just the 40K single model category! It’s a testament to the dedication and skill within our community. I had the privilege of getting early access to photograph some entries, and trust me, the quality was exceptional.
However, lighting within the display cabinets proved to be a challenge, sometimes not doing justice to the intricate work of the painters. It’s essential to remember that models are often painted under different lighting conditions, which can significantly affect their appearance.
As for my entry, I chose a vampire unit for the Age of Sigma category. While it earned a commended entry, it didn’t win. But that’s the beauty of Golden Demon – it’s not just about winning. It’s about pushing your boundaries, learning, and being part of an incredibly talented community.
The judging process, understandably, is immensely challenging due to the sheer quality and quantity of entries. The range of styles and creativity on display was astounding. From young bloods to seasoned veterans, each entry told a unique story. It’s this diversity and richness that makes Golden Demon such a spectacular event.
One key takeaway from Warhammer Fest 2023 is the importance of category criteria. Your piece might be a masterpiece, but if it doesn’t align well with the category’s specifics, it might not get the recognition it deserves. It’s a delicate balance between creativity and adhering to guidelines.
Despite not winning, I am incredibly proud of my work and the positive feedback it received. There’s always something to learn, and I’m already brimming with ideas for next year.
A massive congratulations to all the entrants, especially those who took home the trophies. Your talent and dedication are what make Golden Demon the pinnacle of miniature painting competitions.
To all aspiring Golden Demon participants, my advice is simple: keep painting, keep experimenting, and most importantly, keep enjoying this wonderful hobby of ours. See you at the next Golden Demon!
