How to Paint the Loonboss on Giant Cave Squig – Golden Demon Silver Winner

The Squig needed a Knight, so here’s my shiny NMM fellow, with tips on the banner, woodgrain, NMM and more.

How to Paint the Giant Cave Squig – Silver Golden Demon Winner!

A really fun experience playing with colour and texture! These videos show I created this bright little fellow.

2024 – Silver Golden Demon Winner : Loonboss on Giant Cave Squig

I really enjoyed painting this model and all the fun textures, colours and techniques involved in creating him! At the 2024 Golden Demon at Adepticon, Chicago, I was lucky enough to get a Silver Demon in the “Open” Competition.

2019 – Gold Golden Demon Winner : Mortarion

I began painting him when the model first came out, and only finished it just in time for the Crystal Brush. It was such a difficult model to paint due to the massive amount of details and the difficulty in holding it without rubbing the paint off! I’m so happy it’s finally done. I was awarded a Gold – Warhammer 40,000 Large Model – at Warhammer Fest 2019.

2018 – Gold Golden Demon Winner : Rotigus

2018 – Gold Golden Demon Winner : Rotigus – Age of Sigmar Open Day

Entering the Warhammer Age of Sigmar Golden Demon was a new experience for me as I usually paint Warhammer 40,000 models for competition, especially models that feature plenty of opportunities for freehand. I’d missed the previous Golden Demon event for Warhammer Age of Sigmar, so I was very excited to see which models other people would enter. I’m a big fan of the Nurgle range and was immediately drawn to Rotigus, the new named Great Unclean One character. It features a bewildering amount of detail, so I knew it would be a challenge to paint.

A selection of videos on how I created some of the effects on my Great Unclean One including the horns, staff and friendly nurgling. With Nurgle-esque glows, rots, maggots and weathered copper details.

To top my day off, I also received another gold trophy for my entry in the Unbound category! This was quite a shock, as it was an older Lord of Plagues model that I had painted and hadn’t originally been intended as a Golden Demon entry. Nurgle had indeed smiled on me!

Or, click below for some videos I created for painting Maggotkin of Nurgle, which use the same techniques.

Here are the photos of my finished knight lancer. After convincing myself that I wasn’t going to place in the Golden Demon, I was happy to win the Forge World Best in Show and the silver demon for vehicle behind the amazing Karol Rudyk. The quality of entries for this Golden Demon were the highest I have ever seen!

Vehicle Gold – Horus Heresy Weekender

The reason I painted a Warhound was because I wanted to paint something big with lots of space for freehand artwork. I also have a passion for robots with large guns! The colour scheme is a by-product of me wanting to paint a moth on the model. The Legio Mortis has a more common name, the Death’s Heads, and there is a moth called the death’s-head moth, so it was a perfect fit for me

2016 – Vehicle Gold at the Warhammer 40,000 Open Day: Death Guard Deredeo Dreadnought

2016 – Vehicle Gold at the Warhammer 40,000 Open Day:

The Deredeo has never been regarded as the most attractive of dreadnoughts, with the chest section often being compared to a motorboat. This has resulted in it mainly being painted to a tabletop standard and used for its ability to shoot, unlike its cousin the Contemptor, which often features in Golden Demon competitions.

I’m a massive fan of mechs and the neglected Deredeo caught my eye, so I wanted to see if I could work with it and make it into something interesting.
