Kill Team: Hivestorm Unboxing – Vespid Stingwings vs Tempestus Aquilons
Welcome, Warhammer fans! Today, we’re diving into one of the most exciting unboxings of the year – the Kill Team: Hivestorm box set. This epic box is packed with new rules, stunning miniatures, and immersive terrain that’ll let you drop straight into the action of covert skirmish warfare in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Whether you’re an Imperial loyalist or a fan of the xenos forces, there’s something in this set for everyone. The intense clash between the deadly Vespid Stingwings and the disciplined Tempestus Aquilons is set to decide the fate of Volkus, a critical planet in the Chalnath Expanse, and we’ve got all the details to share.
What’s Inside the Box?
The Kill Team: Hivestorm box contains 22 brand-new miniatures representing two highly specialised kill teams – the Vespid Stingwings and the Tempestus Aquilons. As these two factions battle for control over the planet Volkus, we’re about to see some of the deadliest skirmishes in the Warhammer 40K universe. Let’s break down each of the forces and their lore.
Vespid Stingwings – Deadly Xenos Auxiliaries
We’ll kick things off with the Vespid Stingwings, who were the first models to come out of the box. These insectoid warriors serve as auxiliary troops for the T’au Empire, bringing deadly speed and precision to the battlefield.
A Unique Origin
The Vespid Stingwings hail from the storm-wracked, high-pressure world of Vespid. This planet is covered in floating rock islands, where the Stingwings evolved, developing incredible mobility and resilience. These traits make them highly valued by the T’au Empire, who incorporate them into their military as fast-moving shock troops.
Flight – The Vespid’s Deadly Advantage
What makes the Vespid stand out is their ability to fly. These insectoid warriors take to the air with ease, soaring over obstacles like walls, dense terrain, or even enemy fortifications. This mobility allows them to execute flanking manoeuvres and surprise attacks with terrifying efficiency. If you’ve noticed the wings on the sprues, you’ll see just how much care has gone into sculpting their agile forms.
Neutron Blasters – Devastating Xenos Weaponry
Each Stingwing is equipped with a Neutron Blaster, a short-ranged but devastating weapon developed by the T’au. These blasters emit lethal bursts of neutron radiation, capable of tearing through armour and turning biological targets into little more than ash. The Vespid need to get in close to use these weapons effectively, but their speed and ability to fly allow them to weave through cover and strike before the enemy can react.
The Strain Leader and Communion Helm
Vespid kill teams are led by a Strain Leader, equipped with a Communion Helm. This advanced piece of technology allows the Strain Leader to coordinate with the T’au forces, bridging the communication gap between the xenos and their T’au allies. Without this helm, the Stingwings would struggle to work alongside the T’au, but with it, they become an integral part of the T’au’s combined arms strategy.
The Stingwings’ collaboration with the T’au military has proven incredibly effective, often operating as mobile reserve units or flankers. Their ability to appear where they’re least expected makes them a vital asset to T’au commanders, who rely on their swift and devastating strikes.
Tempestus Aquilons – The Emperor’s Elite
Now, let’s shift gears to the Tempestus Aquilons, the highly trained soldiers of the Imperium. These warriors are handpicked from the ranks of the Militarum Tempestus and specialise in grav-chute deployments, allowing them to strike from the skies with deadly precision.
Forged in the Schola Progenium
The story of the Tempestus Aquilons begins in the Schola Progenium, the brutal training academy where the orphans of high-ranking Imperial officials and military leaders are moulded into the Imperium’s most loyal servants. From Commissars to Battle Sisters and even the Inquisition, the Schola produces individuals with unshakable devotion to the Emperor.
Graduates who show the highest potential are inducted into the Militarum Tempestus, becoming elite soldiers known as Tempestus Scions. Their training surpasses that of the standard Astra Militarum, equipping them with superior weapons and armour. But the Tempestus Aquilons? They’re on another level entirely.
The Art of the Grav-Chute
One of the defining features of the Tempestus Aquilons is their grav-chute, which allows them to perform near-orbital drops with unparalleled accuracy. These devices slow their fall just enough to let them leap from aircraft or towering heights and land exactly where they’re needed on the battlefield. The Aquilons have perfected this risky manoeuvre, making it a key part of their tactical doctrine.
As you examine the grav-chutes on the sprues, you’ll notice the level of detail that’s gone into sculpting these critical pieces of gear. Not only do they look impressive, but they also serve a vital role in the Aquilons’ ability to dominate the killzone.
Close-Quarters Combat Masters
In terms of weapons, the Tempestus Aquilons are built for close-quarters combat and surgical strikes. Their melta and plasma carbines are perfect for melting through the toughest armour, while their hot-shot las carbines are designed to fire while the Aquilons are in the midst of their grav-chute drops. This combination of mobility and firepower allows the Aquilons to hit hard and fast before the enemy has a chance to react.
Drop Insertion Tactics
One of the most dangerous tactics used by the Tempestus Aquilons is their Drop Insertion ability. Rather than deploying all at once, two-thirds of the team will begin the game high above the battlefield, waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Using drop markers, the Aquilons can reposition themselves during the game, landing on high vantage points or behind enemy lines to outflank their foes.
This tactic, combined with their ability to adapt and improvise, makes the Tempestus Aquilons a force to be reckoned with. Imperial commanders rely on these elite soldiers for high-risk missions where failure is not an option, and their aggressive, close-quarters fighting style ensures that they hit the enemy where it hurts the most.
Rulebooks and Campaign Details
The Kill Team: Hivestorm box doesn’t just come with miniatures; it’s also packed with a 112-page Core Rulebook and a 72-page Hivestorm Dossier. The rulebook contains everything you need to play the new edition of Kill Team, while the Hivestorm Dossier delves deep into the campaign for Volkus, setting the stage for your battles.
Volkus is a strategically important planet in the Chalnath Expanse, home to one of the largest artillery pieces in the galaxy. Both the Tempestus Aquilons and the Vespid Stingwings have been dispatched to this world, with everything on the line as they battle for control of this powerful weapon.
Terrain and Extras
No skirmish battlefield is complete without terrain, and the Kill Team: Hivestorm box has you covered. It includes 14 substantial pieces of terrain, perfect for creating multi-layered battlefields that will challenge even the most experienced commanders. Whether you’re using the high ground for sniping or darting through cover, this terrain is going to play a huge role in your strategy.
In addition to the miniatures and terrain, the box includes 36 Approved Operations Cards, two token sheets, dice, and an equipment pack with 30 pieces of plastic gear. You’ve got everything you need to fully immerse yourself in the tactical side of Kill Team.
The Kill Team: Hivestorm box is an absolute must for any fan of fast-paced, high-stakes skirmish combat in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. Whether you prefer the deadly speed and mobility of the Vespid Stingwings or the disciplined precision of the Tempestus Aquilons, this box offers everything you need to wage intense battles on the planet Volkus.
