This video takes a look at my trip to Warhammer Fest in Manchester and the Golden Demon UK 2023! Expect me rambling about the event and lots of video footage of the amazing models in the cabinets….
If you’re as deep into the Warhammer universe as I am, you probably live for events like Golden Demon. This past weekend, I dove headfirst into the experience, and I have thoughts to share about the whole Warhammer Fest extravaganza.
Golden Demon UK 2023 Venue: Manchester’s Grand Stage
First things first, the venue shift to Manchester was a game-changer. The Manchester Arena provided the perfect backdrop for the Golden Demon awards ceremony. The room they had for that was nothing short of spectacular, adding an extra layer of magic to the event.
The Manchester arena is definitely sizable and especially for things like the Golden Demon awards ceremony at the end, the room they had for that was really really nice and made it feel much more special.
Missing the Legends: Design Staff Absence
Addressing the elephant in the room—the absence of the design staff. Remember the days when you could chat to the artists, authors, and sculptors, getting the inside scoop on their work? Sadly, those days seem to be behind us.
New Releases and Endless Queues
The excitement surrounding the new Warhammer 40,000 Leviathan box game was palpable. Cue the long queues of eager hobbyists, each itching to lay eyes on the latest models. I think that was a big draw… personally, it was all about the Golden Demon, that’s really why I came!
The Golden Demon Experience: A Videographer’s Challenge
Now, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of the Golden Demon competition. Armed with my recording gear, I embarked on a mission to capture every glorious model. However, let’s be real—the video quality may not be Oscar-worthy. You probably see a few things out of focus or whatever… I did the best I could!
Stickers and Secrets: Decoding the Judging Process
Let’s talk about the mysterious stickers. Green, orangey-yellowy, and gray—each holding a secret message about the fate of a model. And let’s not forget the new addition, the coveted commended entry card.
The stickers are not there for the general public, and the judges like to have a little bit of fun with them. Be aware that you’ll never know what you’ve won until the end – don’t be disheartened by the stickers!
Be aware that I am NOT a judge and am only basing the below on my observations at the event – take the below with a pinch of salt…
Green Sticker: Finalist Status
- Indicates that the model has made the first cut and is likely to be a finalist.
- The model’s creator receives a finalist pin as recognition.
If you had a green sticker on your card, that meant you had made the first cut and that meant you were probably going to be a finalist, and you’ll get a finalist pin.
Orangey Yellowy Sticker: Fragility Alert
- Indicates that the entered model is considered fragile.
- The presence of this sticker doesn’t necessarily reflect the quality of the model but might highlight elements like flying parts or interesting, fragile features.
The orangey yellowy stickers meant that the model that you had entered was fragile… it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s good or bad or better than anything else.
Gray Sticker: Judged by the Judges
- Suggests that the judges have specifically looked at the model.
- Often used to mark models in categories like purple sticker pieces, possibly indicating extra attention from the judges.
There were gray stickers, and I think those were put there to show that the judges had looked at the purple sticker pieces.
Purple Sticker: Mystery and Intrigue
- Represents a mysterious element in the judging process – I don’t know what these mean!
Commended Entry Card (Black): Special Recognition
- Awarded to a select number of entries, usually five or six within a category.
- Indicates that the judges found the model to be of exceptional quality and deserving of special recognition.
They pick, depending on how many entries there are and just the quality of the pieces overall, generally five or six pieces within a cabinet, and they will have the commended entry and the finalist pin next to them…
Elven Elegance: A Personal Favourite
Amidst the multitude of entries, one stood out—the elves from the Age of Sigma single unit category. The intricate details, brush control, and overall composition left me in awe.
You can see lots of photos of the winners on the (unofficial) Golden Demon Compendium website.
On Stage Jitters and Model Myths
The awards ceremony, where every entrant is on stage awaiting their fate, is a rollercoaster of emotions. And let’s debunk a few myths—your model doesn’t have to be brand new to win, and the judges aren’t as rigid as you might think.
Celebrating Creativity: The True Essence of Golden Demon
As I roamed through the entries, I couldn’t help but marvel at the diversity and creativity on display. The Golden Demon isn’t just a competition; it’s a celebration of the Warhammer community’s passion and talent.
For me personally, that’s the most interesting point of the competition is just to go and celebrate having all these models on display and seeing all the work that people have put in.
Myth-Busting and Looking Ahead
Before we wrap up, let’s bust a few myths. Your model doesn’t need non-metallic metal or object source lighting to win. And remember, Golden Demon isn’t the be-all and end-all of model painting.
Make sure you enjoy just talking to everyone, seeing what they’ve done, getting thoughts on the work an your work, and trying to guess what’s going to win.
Closing Thoughts: A Golden Adventure
In the end, Golden Demon isn’t just about the awards. It’s about the experience, the inspiration, and the shared love for this incredible hobby. As I plan to attend more Golden Demons in the future, I’ll keep honing my recording skills and maybe, just maybe, get my third Slayer Sword…
So here’s to more Golden Demons, more masterpieces, and more unforgettable moments in the Warhammer universe. Keep painting, keep creating, and most importantly, keep having fun!
