Top Tips on How to Paint a Krulghast Cruciator
Preparation: Ensure the model is fully built and primed. Consider leaving it in sections for easier access to nooks and crannies.
Airbrush Techniques: When airbrushing, consider masking off areas to prevent overspray. Pay attention to angles, especially when tilting the model, to avoid unwanted over-spraying.
Layering with Airbrush: Begin with a base coat using a dark color like Fire Dragon Bright, then gradually build up highlights with Blue Horror. Be mindful of potential speckling with lighter colors.
Transition Colours: Use transitional colors like Wild Rider and Troll Slayer Orange to create smooth gradients between different sections. Be cautious with light colors as they can turn the paint pink when highlighting.
Brush Selection: Use different brush sizes based on the details you’re working on. A smaller brush for fine details and a larger one for broader strokes.
Highlighting Techniques: When highlighting red areas, be mindful of not turning it too pink. Use layering and glazing techniques to maintain the desired color intensity.
Consistency in Direction: Follow the sculpted lines of the model to enhance the flow of details. This helps maintain a consistent look, especially when dealing with non-metallics.
Edge Highlights: Add edge highlights with lighter colors like Vallejo White Gray to define shapes and create a shiny effect. Use a smaller brush for precision.
Contrast: Create high contrast between light and dark areas. Pay attention to the sculpted details and follow the direction of the model’s flow for a visually appealing result.
Wood Effect: For the wood effect, start with Rhinox Hide, covering everything roughly. Emphasize lightness towards the edges of each plank to create a more natural look.
Chain Links: When painting chain links, focus on high-contrast highlights to give them a shiny appearance. Spend extra time on this part to make it interesting, even though it’s secondary.
Green Flame: Paint the green flame with Warpstone Glow, adding small, bright yellow dots for high contrast. Warpstone Glow is difficult to use and covers quite badly and adjust your painting technique accordingly, you may need to build it up to many layers, letting each dry fully first..
Matte Varnish: Finish the model with a coat of ultra-matte varnish to remove any shine and ensure an even surface.
