Sepulchral Guard

How to Paint a Sepulchral Guard

I’m a little manic painting for Golden Demon next week (I hope I see some of you at Essen!) but, in honour of the BONEZONE competition which has just one month until judging, I’ve reuploaded my How to Paint a Sepulchral Guard videos, plus a new step by step guide to follow along.

How to Paint a Sepulchral Guard

In this tutorial, we will cover the key steps and techniques, along with specific paints used to create a gritty, worn look for this undead warrior.

This one’s from way back in 2019, but it’s still a personal favourite of mine. In these videos, we’re tackling the Sepulchral Guard Warden from the Warhammer Underworlds: Shadespire box set. This was one of the first times I really got stuck into creating that gritty, aged look for a model, and I had a lot of fun experimenting with textures, rough painting techniques, and glowing eyes (you know I love a good glow effect).

I approached this model a bit differently to how I normally do things, especially with the bones—using Balor Brown and Ushabti Bone for a really dirty, worn-out feel, rather than the clean, bright bones you often see on skeletons. It’s been fun revisiting this older video and remembering some of the techniques I was trying out back then—particularly the fur collar with that Death Guard Green glaze to get that nice aged look.
