I did a quick video review of the Redgrass Games Everlasting Wet Palette after they sent me some of the new membrane paper to try out.
In this review, I delve into the Everlasting Wet Palette 2, specifically focusing on its new membrane, as that was the component sent to me for testing.
Key Highlights:
- Durability of the Membrane: The primary aspect I tested was the membrane’s robustness. The original Everlasting Wet Palette kickstarted with the idea of a reusable membrane, which unfortunately didn’t materialize as hoped. However, this new membrane version aims to fulfill that promise. My testing over a month, including under varied temperatures, showcased its impressive durability. I could wash and reuse the same piece repeatedly without significant wear, a substantial improvement over its predecessor.
- Ease of Cleaning: The membrane cleans remarkably well under tap water using a soft brush, maintaining its integrity even with regular washing. While some stubborn paint rings formed, especially in hotter conditions, these were manageable. The paper’s resilience to cleaning without tearing or being punctured by a brush is commendable, though some minor staining from Vallejo and Games Workshop paints was noted.
- Surface Smoothness: A significant improvement was the absence of creases on the wet palette after laying down the membrane. The original version often settled with unavoidable creases despite efforts to smooth them out, affecting paint application. This new version lies perfectly flat, enhancing the painting experience by eliminating issues caused by creases, such as paint drying unevenly or mingling with other colours.
- Colour Background: The membrane is now white, contrasting the previous greyish parchment-like paper. This change significantly improves colour visibility and clarity when applying paint, making it easier to work with a variety of hues.
Personal Takeaway:
The smoothness of the membrane and its white background stand out as game-changers for me. While the reusability aspect is appreciated, especially for hobbyists mindful of their material consumption, the quality of the painting surface takes precedence in my professional workflow. The ease with which colours can be applied and distinguished on this new white, crease-free surface marks a vast improvement over the original and even homemade wet palettes.
Conclusion:
The Everlasting Wet Palette 2’s new membrane represents a significant step forward in quality and functionality. Its durability, ease of cleaning, and particularly the smooth, white surface greatly enhance the miniature painting process, making it a valuable tool for both professional and hobbyist painters alike. While I can’t comment on updates to the case or other components as they were not sent to me, the membrane alone has proven to be a worthy investment for those looking to upgrade their painting setup.
