A How to paint Non-Metallic Metal Brushed Steel Guide. PDF Tutorial!
This is a simple technique to give the impression of a metallic object using standard paints. I have
expanded on it to add texture to the surface to create a brushed steel effect. It bears a lot in common
with the armour effect of the Lord of Plagues and is a good example on how you can adapt a technique
to get a completely different look.
Although I provide the colours to achieve the same effect as my version, you should feel free to try out
different colours to represent different metals and lighting environments, for example, it might be
interesting to use Vallejo Buff for the highlights to show warm light reflecting on it.
What’s Covered in the Guide:
- Materials and Paints: A list of specific paints used, including Vallejo Model Colour, P3, and Coat d’Arms, with suggestions for alternatives.
- Base Coating: Start with a base coat of Vallejo Black to create a dark, matte finish as a foundation for the steel effect.
- Building Texture: Tips on creating a rough base and incorporating small areas of black paint to add depth and realism.
- Creating the Brushed Steel Effect: Instructions on making criss-cross pattern marks with Ultramarine Blue mixed with Black Grey to mimic the appearance of brushed steel.
- Highlighting and Refining: Adding thinner lines and highlights using Neutral Grey and Pale Blue Grey to further define the light points and create the illusion of brushed steel.
- Adding Bright Highlights and Final Touches: Use white to pick out bright points and add depth. Final glazing with Coat d’arms Black and Battlefield Brown to blend the lines and add shadow.
