In this tutorial, we’re tackling how to paint an Acastus Asterius, one of the most striking knight models in Legions Imperialis and Adeptus Titanicus. Whether you’re building your force for display or tabletop, this guide shows how to achieve a quick, neat, and impactful finish that captures the model’s scale detail while still working fast.
This model was part of an early review set from Games Workshop, and I’ve painted it to match my existing House Malinax force, complete with their signature bone armour, black trim, and bold red crenellations.

Painting Big in Small Scale: When working on a model that looks towering and intricate (like the Acastus Asterius) but is actually quite small, it helps to simplify your technique without sacrificing impact. Focus on bold highlight placement and clear tonal contrast rather than micro-detail. Use texture and broken edge transitions to suggest depth, and lean on weathering or washes to add realism without clutter. It’s all about selling the illusion of scale, not replicating every tiny detail.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Airbrushing the Armour
- Basecoat with AK Cork, followed by highlights using Morghast Bone and AK Ivory.
- Key tip: Focus on upwards-facing curves for realistic light placement. Thin your paint with Vallejo airbrush thinner, and use a 0.4 needle at 35 PSI for smooth layers.
2. Metallic Areas
- Sprayed with Vallejo Metal Color Exhaust Manifold, then touched up by brush for overspray.
- Add accents in Copper for visual interest.
3. Red Detailing
- Mix Mephiston Red with Burnt Red for the base, then layer up with Mephiston Red and Evil Sunz Scarlet for saturated highlights on missile pods and crenellations.
4. Black Trim & Edge Highlights
- Blocked in with AK Black, then progressively highlighted with mixes of Anthracite Grey, Neutral Grey, and a touch of white at the brightest spots.
- Use stippling and drybrush effects for texture on carapace trim, but edge highlighting for smaller details like legs and joints.
5. Hazard Stripes
- Cables painted with XV-88 and highlighted with Two Thin Coats Dark Sun Yellow.
- Use crisp diagonal lines and finish with spot highlights in yellow for a feathered blend.
6. Base
- Drybrushed with Vallejo Neutral Grey and AK White, then oil washed with Burnt Umber mixed with Sansodor thinner for a grimy, realistic effect.
7. Oil Wash
- Applied across the whole model to tie colours together and enhance shadow contrast. No gloss varnish is needed—this technique softly bleeds into the acrylic paint for a natural look.
Pro Tips
- Don’t mask your metals—just go back over them by hand. It’s quicker and the oil wash will unify tones later.
- Rivet trouble? Use a size 00 brush and a thicker edge highlight consistency to reduce pooling around trim details.
- Skip the varnish stage for the wash to get a more organic weathered finish. Just tidy up any pooling afterwards.
This method is perfect for painters looking to get strong results without investing hundreds of hours on each mini. Whether you’re building a full House Malinax force or just want a showstopping centrepiece for your Imperialis army, this is a versatile approach you can adapt across your Knight builds.
