Necromunda Hive Secundus Unboxing!

For those new to the grimdark world of Necromunda, let’s start with a brief introduction. Necromunda is a hive world within the Imperium of Man, known for its massive, decaying hive cities. These cities are home to billions, living and fighting in a brutal dystopian society. Hive Secundus was once a shining jewel of Necromunda, a bustling hive city. However, over a century ago, something insidious was discovered at its heart. In response, it was razed to the ground, and the ruins were declared quarantine extremis.

Now, the tunnels beneath Hive Secundus, known as the Underhive, are a deadly labyrinth filled with untold riches and unspeakable horrors. In this expansion, players take on the role of the Sump Incursion gangs, bands of House Van Saar tech-hunters, and their accompanying spyrers. They venture into the Underhive, facing off against the horrors that lie in wait as they search for hidden treasures. This box set offers a thematic, self-contained adventure for both players and arbitrators.

What’s Inside the Box?

Spyrer Orrus Models:
The Spyrer Orrus models are among the most impressive in this set. These towering figures are equipped with advanced armor that is both sleek and intimidating, yet it retains the gritty, industrial feel of Necromunda. Each model consists of about 35 pieces, offering a rewarding and detailed build. The armor is heavily fortified at the front but leaves the back almost completely unprotected, a stark reminder of the spyrers’ arrogance.

Building these models was a delightful experience. The kit includes several head options, and you can even use heads from the Escher range to add extra flair. The multiple weapon options include power talons, power fists, bolt launchers, volkite dischargers, and disintegration matrices, providing some variety. However, it is difficult to create new poses due to the fixed nature of the limbs. Typically, you can only use one Spyrer Orrus in your Secundus gang, and it’s rare to see more than two in a Spyrer gang.

Caryatid Prime:
This tiny yet formidable model stands out due to its eerie design and delicate construction. The Caryatid Prime has a very thin connection to the base, making it very fragile and requiring careful handling. Despite its small size, it adds a significant amount of character and menace to your game.

Van Saar Hunters:
The Van Saar Hunters are a testament to intricate design and detail. These models come with a variety of weapons and equipment options, allowing for extensive customization. However, their assembly can be quite challenging due to the small and fiddly pieces, such as neck guards that are the size of a red pepper flake. Each tech-hunter body offers two assembly options, and the inclusion of empty hands adds potential for more customization.

Van Saar tech-hunters are brave and elite adventurers from the House of Artifice, on a desperate mission to save their house from impending doom. They are slowly being poisoned by the radiation emitted by their own advanced technology, and the tech-hunters’ mission is a last-ditch effort to find a solution.

Malstrain Genestealers:
These six mutated genestealers are both visually striking and complex to assemble. Each model offers unique head options and posable limbs, but the numerous protruding parts can make them quite challenging to handle and paint.

Malstrain Tyramites:
The Tyramites are small, spindly creatures with delicate tendrils that can easily snap. Their assembly is straightforward, but handling them requires care.

Brood Scum:
The Brood Scum are essentially rebranded Hive Scum with new heads to reflect their cultist nature. They come with various weapons and five different head options. Despite their simplicity, these models effectively convey the ragtag and desperate nature of the Underhive inhabitants.

Terrain and Accessories

The Necromunda bulkhead terrain is quite sparse, consisting of a single bulkhead sprue with five walls and two doors. While this provides some basic structure for your battles, it falls short of creating a fully immersive environment. For a more complete experience, you’ll want to invest in additional terrain like the Ruin Mortalis and the Hive Data-stack Cluster.

The set includes two double-sided paper game mats. While these mats are well-designed, they are thin and not as durable as other options. The rulebook is a 176-page softback, packed with great artwork and nearly 30 pages of new lore. It includes the complete core rules (excluding vehicle rules) and detailed instructions for seven scenarios in the Underhive campaign. The layout is improved for readability, although the thematic framing can sometimes make following the steps a bit challenging.
